Best of/ Orangenial Artists of 2008

Hey! I haven’t had one of these in forever! I thought that instead of doing the traditional top albums list, I would try a top 18 artists of the year list, covering only new discoveries of the year. This means that everyone on my list will either be new or an older unknown (to me) artist with a new US album. I guess this is my way of organizing my albums, by recently discovered artists…

Off Colors:
Miley Cyrus
Katy Perry
Cut Copy

18. Olivia Broadfield
Album: Eyes Wide Open | Release Date: 01.01.2008
I have no idea how I checked her out but she’s slowly becoming public on popular shows.

17. Lights
Album: Lights EP | Release Date: 09.18.2008
The female you heard on those Old Navy commercials in 2008!

16. Neon Neon
Album: Stainless Style | Release Date: 03.18.2008
It was just in a few weeks that Neon Neon became big on mtvU and Pitchfork yet only a few tracks really stood out… enough to have them make the list. I lust you :-p

15. The Duke Spirit
Album: Neptune | Release Date: 02.04.2008
While also randomly discovered through mtvU, they held a spot by having a strong sound. Crazy to think of how many years it took me to find out about them. “The Step and the Walk” is super eerie, I love it!

14. The Ting Tings
Album: We Started Nothing | Release Date: 05.16.2008
They were on Apple commercials with “That’s Not My Name” and “Shut Up and Let Me Go.” They also had “Shut Up and Let Me Go” premiere on FN MTV. In just a year, they hit it big. “That’s Not My Name” is just so damn cute!

13. Scarlett Johansson
Album: Anywhere I Lay My Head | Release Date: 05.16.2008
Actress to singer, her album featured Tom Waits covers and one original song. Somehow her voice fit his style way too well but his style in general requires certain moods, hence the low ranking. I actually started liking her album after I heard more Tom Waits on my own. I can’t wait for her second album though!
