Best Of/ Albums of 2010

This has been one insane year. While music has played less of a role than previously, there are still albums and singles that remind me of certain moments, good and bad. This year’s title references a song that I really liked last year, “Embrace” by PNAU, because I think that best defines 2010 for me. Anyway, enough of the heartfelt introduction, time to start off the albums (both LPs and EPs are allowed) list!

So I gave these albums an actual shot but my perception could not meet the actual talent that was presented.

21. Gorillaz – Plastic Beach | Release Date: March 03, 2010

Over the last few years, I have come to really love Gorillaz. It’s just that that it would happen in bursts.

22. Holly Miranda – The Magician’s Private Library | Release Date: February 23, 2010

Wonderful music and wonderful performer. She reminds me of earlier this year.

23. The Roots – How I Got Over | Release Date: June 22, 2010

I think them being on Jimmy Fallon and friend helped motivate me to actually getting this.

24. Arcade Fire – The Suburbs | Release Date: August 02, 2010

Another case of not listening to an album as much as I should have. Great singles/videos though.

25. Klaxons – Surfing the Void | Release Date: August 23, 2010

In ’08, I didn’t really get into them but liked what I heard, so I am glad to finally have checked them out.

26. Two Door Cinema Club – Tourist History | Release Date: February 28, 2010

This also reminds me a lot of earlier this year, which is both good and bad. They’re quite catchy.

27. Rihanna – Loud | Release Date: November 12, 2010

What’s my name? I’m crazy and will scream about being the only girl in the world.

28. The New Pornographers – Together | Release Date: May 04, 2010

Seeing them definitely helped me like them a lot more but I realize I need to be in the right mood.

29. Caribou – Swim | Release Date: April 19, 2010

It took me way too long to discover Caribou but man, oh so catchy!

30. Fol Chen – Part II: The New December | Release Date: July 06, 2010

Another disappointing second album, it just didn’t live up but still quite very good.

31. LCD Soundsystem – This is Happening

Dance Yrself Clean was a great introduction. I also loved the videos.

32. Devo – Something for Everybody

There really is something for everybody! A great album that did not get heard as much as it should have.

33. The Bird and the Bee – Interpreting the Masters

I really like their interpretation… because I really like their style. My favorite was Rich Girl probably.

34. Apples in Stereo – Travellers in Space and Time

They probably were the least space/time-y sounding on my list. They’re usually mellow fun.

35. The Like – Release Me

I really like The Like and their older sound. I was fairly content with their album but wish I heard it sooner.

36. Kylie Minogue – Aphrodite

You can never go wrong with Kylie but I felt like she could do a lot better.

37. Kate Nash – My Best Friend is You

Another great album that was slightly disappointing in comparison.

38. Crystal Castles – Crystal Castles II

Apparently I had very high expectations for second albums this year.

39. Vampire Weekend – Contra

How else could I be so disappointed when comparing?

40. Lali Puna – Our Inventions

It could just be that comparing is a bad idea in general.

weak almost-orange hugs:
!!!: Strange Weather, Isn’t It?
Dead Weather: Sea of Cowards
Eels: End Times
Girl Talk: All Day
Janelle Monae: The ArchAndroid
Ke$ha: Animal
The National: High Violet
Ratatat: LP4
Robyn: Body Talk
Sia: We Are Born

The reason why these albums didn’t quite make it was because I either discovered them a little too late or I never was as compelled to check out the full albums but liked whatever I randomly heard. Of course, as the usual disclaimer, I’m sure I’ve forgotten other gems from this year or will grow to love certain things, changing my whole list, but this list represents what I can think of at this time and this time only. I doubt I’d finish my list in time of new years day but I figured I’d still at least begin it before the end of 2010.
